Chapter Nine
After making the bed and getting dressed, Jordan rubbed a hand over her eyes. Last night, she managed a few hours of sleep, but exhaustion wreaked havoc on her body. Her worry subsided after she found Miska. He was safe and resting on his bed in Jordanâs apartment. Unfortunately, anxiety still taunted her racing pulse.
Who took Miska? Did Pearl get the answers she hoped for? When would Jordan gather the nerve to talk to her father? Too many questions surfaced and not enough answers.
Walking toward the kitchen, she was tantalized by the scents of cinnamon and fresh baked bread. She assumed Margaret was preparing breakfast for their guests, but seeing Logan, Jordan did a double take. He wore one of Pearlâs frilly aprons around his waist. The sunflower design had flour smudges, as did the black T-shirt stretched across his broad chest. He seemed quite at home managing the kitchen. âNice look.â
Logan held up a whisk dripping with pancake mix. âWhy, thank you. Not sure if I do the ruffles justice.â
âYou rock them.â She winked.
Smiling, he motioned toward a chair at the wooden island counter. âBreakfast will be ready shortly, but you can have the first pancakes off the grill.â
Inhaling a deep breath, she peered through the ovenâs glass window. âCinnamon rolls.â Then she spied six loaves of bread resting on a cooling pan. âBread, too.â Stomach growling, Jordan hopped onto a stool. âHow did you get Margaret to leave you alone in her kitchen?â
âI promised to cook Aunt Pearlâs beef stew. Margaret hasnât mastered the recipe.â
She raised an eyebrow. âI find that hard to believe. Beef stew doesnât sound that difficult.â
âMargaret doesnât know the secret ingredient. Aunt Pearl left it out of the recipe.â He tapped a finger to his head. âI memorized it.â
Jordan leaned over the counter and read the open page of the cookbook. âCarne Guisada?â
âStewed beef.â Logan chuckled.
âBeef, scallions, garlic, tomato, cumin, and cilantro. Whatâs the secret?â
He pointed toward a large pot simmering on the stoveâs back burner. âIf I told you, I would have to kill you.â
She grimaced. âSeriously.â
He dropped the whisk in the bowl and put his elbows on the counter.
His head was mere inches from hers. The smell of his musky aftershave had her longing to run a hand over his cheek.
âThe taste is all in the gravy. Margaret uses water.â He held up a bottle. âI use beer.â
His eyesâ¦she could get lost in those deep blues. She longed to forget all her troubles, all the secrets, all the lies.
âA bit early in the morning for beer, isnât it?â
At the sound of Karenâs voice, Jordan jumped off the stool and walked toward the pot of brewing coffee.
âGood morning.â Logan twisted off the bottle cap. âI promise none is in your pancakes.â
âI wouldnât mind.â Karen snickered. âI could use a little pick-me-up before todayâs meeting. Logan, do you have any idea what this lawyer wants?â
Jordan passed Karen a cup of coffee.
Logan shook his head then placed a plate of pancakes on the counter.
Karen waved a hand.
